Hey Rob, hope all is OK since you haven't blogged in a while.

Yes, I think figuring out the difference between needs and wants is perhaps the most important piece of knowledge you'll ever gain!

You're thinking of Oslo, that is one insanely expensive country along with Sweden!! Outside of the exchange rate Spain is relatively in-expensive. Portugal is a bit cheaper and both are less expensive than Northern Europe. Certainly eating can be a good deal. You could take a look at madridman.com or numerous other websites dedicated to Spain.

The government pays for the move. We didn't pay anything. And they give you free temporary housing and extra expense money. (They did back then anyhow)
I had read where a gin and lemon is like $18 American Dollars? Is that true...and dinner out can cost $60. for one person?
Wow, we were thinking of coming to Spain for a week to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary (in 3 years). We might come sooner, depends on some things going on in our lives right now.
If things are that expensive, We will rent an apt. for a week and cook and buy our own liquior in that case.

Things were way way cheaper than, that would have been about 10 years after Franco's death. I've talked to lots of people who said Spain was a very cheap place to visit and live. Today as the standard of living has increased along with the price of everything. Still perhaps outside of housing Spain is cheaper than northern Europe.

Regarding work, we were relocated to Spain for work when everything changed and the project location was moved back to Germany where we were living, rather than relocate again Chris travels instead.

I have to say I don't know how military families move every three years
